Introduction
I’m proud to be a bestselling presidential historian—but even prouder of the 14 years I spent as an educator. I’m a retired college professor who taught at the University of Iowa, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and University of New Hampshire, with so many guest lectures to boot that it’s hard to remember them all—from public flagship research universities like University of Michigan and Northwestern University to art schools like the New Hampshire Institute of Art and The Pratt Institute, from major universities abroad like University of Amsterdam to both R1 satellite campuses and community colleges.
The upshot: I’ve given tens of thousands of grades to thousands of college students, so while I’m now retired from academia and working as a fulltime presidential historian, issuing grades is an endeavor I take very, very seriously.
With this in mind I can say that the Trump administration, even two months before it takes control of the American executive branch, deserves the very worst marks in the history of presidential politics. Any one of the worst six or seven picks president-elect Donald Trump has made so far would be deemed the worst—and most inexplicable—selections of the last century or more. So I have decided to catalogue these picks from the standpoint of someone who’s at once an educator, a historian, a journalist, an attorney, and a leading Trump biographer. Only from an interdisciplinary, bird’s-eye view can we fully appreciate what incompetence, corruption, chaos, mismanagement, and pain awaits America under the stewardship of this singularly unqualified group.
