This stupid TikTok drama disgusts me. I may be wrong, but the penalties the law creates are against those who CARRY the platform--like, well, Apple and Google. THEY had been left in uncertainty over the fines, though Biden said he wouldn't impose them. TikTok shutting ITSELF down was a pure campaign ploy. The whole thing basically saved Oligarchic asses. Who's going to be sitting nice and warm during the inauguration?
The whole "50% US Ownership" does nothing to address the concerns surrounding the app. China can still force a company that only owns half the app to disgorge its data. People really don't understand what AI can DO with data. It isn't a matter of "I don't care who sees my cat video." The data gets amalgamated, able to spot trends among the users, and then the app's own algorithm can steer the vulnerable anywhere it damn well pleases.
Yuval Noah Harari's book goes into the power of the using AI is already at finding patterns in data. I am sure there are others.
The real issue is whether an executive order can simply abrogate a law. For this to be the first instance, given the wide popularity with the unthinking who use the platform, is going to create a difficult challenge to this issue. There are far more serious abrogations incoming and trump can say about them "well, you didn't complain that the order violated the law about TikTok."

Which is why those sites have my contact because low security, low tech savvy and low information baby boomers and low concerned millennials that I know purchase cheap (and by association) disposable products off those sites. So without my permission, the Chinese retail (maybe government) have my info. What is up with this?
