As many said in the comments, this has to be the most powerfully written message I have read in many, many years. It should be published in every newspaper, magazine, etc. Everything you have said speaks to truth. I'm 61 and I am worried about this country. I agree with you 100% that convicting Trump in this impeachment trial is a necessity to show American's and the rest of the world that we will not tolerate anything against our Democracy. America has to continue forward and past this idiocy of time that we have been thru in the last 4 years. Thank you for all that you do.

Wow. That was the most power and moving article for impeachment that could possibly be written. Very impressed. Lets hope enough people stand up for this nation.

This needs to run in every print media outlet in the United States *and* abroad.

Wow. This is stunningly written; clear and urgent.

I desperately want Trump to be found guilty so that HE gets appropriate punishment BUT if he is not convicted my biggest fear is not what Trump will continue to do, but that the majority of the Republican party are so lacking in principle and good judgement that their behavior will bring down the country as we know it and our standing in the world will just be a laughing stock.

"This is a time for audacious idealism; nothing else will do." This is a breathtakingly perfect sentence. Bravo!

Thank you Seth, for making this cogent and frankly upsetting argument. I am not an American but your country is dear to my heart, and I don’t want to lose it.

In spite of trump’s depredations for the last 4 years, there have been some hopeful signs towards a more perfect union: the breakthrough of the Black Lives Matter movement to the greater white population in particular.

My very best wishes to you and the truly moral majority. Hopefully all the secessionists will be investigated, indicted and dealt with under the law.

If he is acquitted, us +7million people that didn't vote for him will be doubly motivated to keep up our phoning, texting, donating, postcard writing, organizing...

Thank you for that well written and passionate call for justice!

I posted on Twitter but I have to tell you that as a daughter of a World War II vet, and the granddaughter of a WWI vet I was deeply influenced by a patriotism, love for a fragile democracy that doesn’t come free & what we stand for in the eyes of the world since I was very young. I have been afraid and disgusted the last several years (actually longer), but the actions of Donald Trump throughout his presidency culminating in the insurrectionist movement since he lost the election has made me ashamed for the first time in my life to be an American. I didn’t vote for him but yet he was our president. The world looks at us with curiosity and pity. Friends in Germany often ask about how we are doing. They are very tuned into our news and they have been afraid for us for a while. And I am afraid that if we cannot convince our senators to convict Trump of the most egregious act that can be committed by a president, then like you I am worried for the fate of this country.

this article should be in every newspaper across the country, including small towns.

I think this is the most important Senate trial in my lifetime and people should understand what is at stake. Thank you!

As a Canadian I view America under Biden as a sober drunk. I’m worried about the next binge and who or what the abusive drunken America will lash out at.

The point that the jury here is really the American people, not the Senators, got a lot more play in the first Trump impeachment; less so this time. Thanks Seth for making the point so forcibly, a timely reminder to those Senators and the people whose voices can be heard.

Our country has never been perfect and other Presidents could balance act their way thru days months years. Before Trump took office the cement was laid for white supremacy to enter. The racism has been here never left but now white supremacy has risen inside the government walls like a blob just melting its way thru.. he must be convicted to show others that this will no longer be tolerated and won’t exist must put them back in the holes they came from their hatred goes beyond Hispanics-Blacks they hate the Jews more then them it’s Nazi hatred this is more then our flag it’s more then our written words this is an army of hate that our children have only heard about from books or documentary. The hate they feel is a serious they have no care in the world to go for another round Trump as President gave them the false hope that they can be invisible take whatever power he has left to ever come back away if they don’t then we will need help because I couldn’t live thru 4ish years of him I can’t live with knowing he might come back. Thank you Seth for all your hard work

An extremely well written and thought provoking article. I totally agree that America needs to convince Trump and for the reasons you state so eloquently. The fabric of your very democracy depends on it, as do democracies throughout the world which look to America as a world leader in so many ways. Or at least they did before Trump. It’s how you deal with this insurrection that you will, as a country, be judged by so many.

Thank you for your work Seth. Sending best wishes from Wales

Your work brings hope to those of us wanting to see justice restored in the United States of America. The US had been a beacon for democracy, human rights and justice. The past four years have seen all of these tenets of freedom erode. Trump must be convicted to restore faith in the US justice system. And faith in the continuation of the democratic process.
